Lawn care in summer — we are to reveal the secrets of a beautiful lawn
Everything you need to know about watering, fertilizing, mowing and in one article. Take note! If you want your lawn to please your eye with groomed, healthy appearance from spring till the beginning of autumn, it is important to take care of it properly and regularly: to observe the interval and dosage of fertilization, follow the mode of cutting and watering, take care of weeds in time. We tell you how to do it correctly.
Features of lawn feeding in summer. The main task of summer lawn fertilizing is to maintain active grass growth, give it a healthy appearance and rich color, and increase its drought resistance. That is why in summer your green “carpet” needs a high dose of nitrogen and potash fertilizers and only a small amount of phosphorus.
|Component||What is it used for?||In case of deficiency of elements||In case of elements excess||Application rate|
|Nitrogen||Stimulates the growth of grassGives a rich green hue||The grass palesGrowth slows
“Bald spots” are formed on the lawn
|The lawn is re-compactedPlants are more susceptible to diseases and less resistant to adverse conditions||15-20 g of ammonium nitrate at 1 m or 15-20 g of urea per 1 sq.m after every second lawn mowing from May to early August and 1 time in late August – September|
|Phosphorus||It stimulates the accumulation of nutrients in plant tissues, which helps them to tolerate winter wellStimulates root formation||The lawn acquires a purple shadeThe grass becomes brittle||Blocks the flow of trace elements to different parts of plantsSlows down the growth of grass
It can turn into an insoluble compound
|100 g of bone meal per 1 sq. m or 15-20 g of superphosphate per 1 sq. m.m once a summer|
|Potassium||Maintains the water-salt balance of plantsIncreases resistance to drought and high temperatures||Grass leaves get marginal burns and die||Grass roots get burned and die||15-20 g of potash salt per 1 sq.m twice in summer|
Of course, it is easier to make complex fertilizers, the composition of which is carefully selected by specialists. This way you will be sure that your lawn gets all the necessary nutrients.
When and how to apply lawn fertilizers?
All fertilizing of lawn grass is carried out after mowing. If the fertilizer is liquid and dissolves well, it can be diluted in a small amount of water and applied directly to the irrigation system.
Dry additional fertilizing is applied on a different principle. Firstly, the lawn needs to be watered, then wait until the grass leaves dry up. Only then can you apply the fertilizer. At the end, the lawn is watered again.
Rules for watering the lawn in summer
To make the juicy green color and fresh appearance of the lawn pleasing to the eye, the grass needs regular abundant watering. However, in this case, you should take into account some important nuances.
- Water only after the turf has dried.
- Do not water the lawn during the day. The best time for watering is early morning, evening or night. Wet grass in the hot sun can simply burn. Humidifying the lawn in the middle of the day can only be in the case of abnormal heat, when one watering per day is not enough.
- The amount of water required for one irrigation depends on the type and degree of drainage of the soil. Be guided by the fact that after «water procedures» the soil should be saturated with moisture to a depth of 10-15 cm.
- You can’t break the watering regime. If the lawn receives water irregularly, it will certainly affect the quality of the grass. In summer, it is enough to water it on average once every 3-5 days.
- It is better to add less water than to make a flood! It is easier to restore a slightly dry lawn than to remove excess water from the flooded turf. Water your grass surface «without fanaticism», if you do not want it to start developing fungus.
When you are watering, use a sprinkler. The lawn must be watered without strong pressure, simulating a fine rain, otherwise you risk washing out the fertile soil layer and damaging the sod.
Note! If you plan to install automatic sprinklers, it is advisable to do it before the lawn is planted on the site. The process of placing an automatic irrigation system is not easy, it requires accurate calculation of the pressure in the pipes and taking into account other nuances. Therefore, if possible, its installation should be entrusted to professionals.
Lawn mowing – how to avoid mistakes
In order for the lawn to be thick, healthy, and beautiful, it must be regularly mowed. However, it is important to do it correctly. The main rule of lawn mowing, regardless of whether you use a trimmer or an ordinary scythe – a sharp tool. Dull blades damage the grass leaves, you can pull out plants with the roots. It does not affect only the appearance of the lawn, but also violates the integrity of the turf.
Another important question is how high to mow the lawn. The answer to this question directly depends on the climate and weather conditions of the area. In non-hot regions with frequent precipitation, you can mow the grass to a minimum height (1-2 cm). If summer droughts and heat are not uncommon in your region, mowing the lawn to a height of less than 3 cm can ruin it. On the other hand, too high grass cover (above 8 cm) provokes the appearance of weeds.
For the middle lane, the optimal height of lawn mowing can be considered 5-7 cm. Naturally, in the hotter days of summer, it is better to mow a few centimeters higher.
Also, do not forget that when using a lawn mower, it is important to observe a uniform mowing rate. If you slow down, then accelerate the speed, the lawn will be mowed unevenly, which also worsens its quality.
The direction of mowing is no less important. Keep in mind that for a smooth, beautiful lawn, it is desirable to alternate the direction of movement of the lawn mower during each haircut.
Our note! The owners of the lawns differ in opinion about whether to immediately remove the grass clippings or leave it as mulch. On the one hand, the «blanket» of cut grass provokes the appearance and attracts earthworms, and after them – and moles. On the other hand, in hot, dry weather, fresh hay reduces moisture evaporation and reduces the «stress» that the herbage experiences after mowing. In addition, organic mulching enriches the soil, improves its structure, and therefore feeds the lawn. Therefore, to removing or leaving of mown grass depends on weather conditions and the state of the lawn.
Potassium Humate liquid peat fertilizer — here you can buy a growth stimulant and highly effective organic fertilizer. Potassium humate makes it possible to obtain environmentally friendly and safe products, increases soil fertility, improves seed germination, and strengthens the immune system of plants.
Potassium humate has a number of advantages:
- It increases the immune system of plants and the energy of seed germination.
- Promotes the development of the root system and reduces the maturation time increases resistance to diseases and adverse conditions.
- It serves as a good conductor of nutrients from the soil.
Application of potassium humate in the cultivation of lawn grass.
An important indicator of soil fertility is the content of humus in the soil. In this case, concentrated humic fertilizers are indispensable.
Laying the lawn. The lawn is laid for more than one year, so you need to take care of the nutrition of plants. Under digging or plowing, mineral fertilizers are applied, mixed with the top layer of soil. It is better to use complex fertilizers containing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium; the rate of application is 2-3 kg per an are or 20-30 g per 1 sq.m.
The unique form of this fertilizer allows you to reduce the leaching of nitrogen from the soil and convert phosphorus into a more accessible form for plants. The rate of application of this fertilizer is reduced by 20-30% compared to the standard one. After thorough cleaning of the area intended for laying the lawn, you need to prepare the soil. Most lawn grasses grow better and develop on medium-sized fertile soils. Putting organic fertilizer and compost under the lawn is an expensive undertaking. In this case, concentrated humic fertilizers are indispensable. It is recommended to put make 20g of fertilizer per 1 sq.m when laying the lawn.
Humic fertilizers not only increase soil fertility, but also contribute to the maintenance of a finely lumpy soil structure. The lumps of earth should not be larger than a grain of corn.
Seeding of lawn grasses. For sowing on 1 sq.m, you need 40-50 g of seeds or 4-5 kg per an are. If you have the opportunity to process the seeds before sowing, it is recommended to soak the seeds in a solution of Potassium humate with trace elements at the rate of 2 g per 10 liters of water for 10-12 hours, then dry them until they are free-flowing.
This technique will increase seed germination by 5-10%, accelerate the growth and development of plants.
If you do not have this option, it is recommended to water the lawn after sowing with a solution of Potassium humate at the rate of 5 g per 10 liters of water.
Lawn care. Watering and feeding. Seedlings appear on 7-21 days after sowing, depending on weather conditions and the type of sown grasses. On average, two weeks are enough for seeds to germinate. Seeds and young seedlings will consume nutrients during the first stages of life.
When feeding young plants, it is recommended to use liquid organomineral fertilizers, which must contain nitrogen, as well as phosphorus and potassium. For these purposes, Liquid Peat is suitable at the rate of 4-6 tablespoons per 10 liters of water. Later, it is recommended to water the lawns with liquid fertilizer at the rate of 2 g per 10 liters of water. Watering with humate solutions is recommended to be performed no more than once a week, they allow to strengthen the growth and development of plants, strengthen the growth of the root system and increase the leaf surface of the plant.
It is recommended to use watering and non-root treatment (spraying) solutions at the rate of 1 g per 10 liters of water, in the case of: suppression of lawn grasses in drought, frosts, application of increased doses of mineral fertilizers.
For normal growth and development, plants require nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, as well as calcium, sulfur, manganese, boron and other elements of nutrition. Perennial grasses in the first year of life are in dire need of nitrogen, so it is recommended to use humatized organomineral nitrogen fertilizers. During the season, the grass is fed with nitrogen fertilizers at the rate of 45 g per 1 sq.m. People usually do it twice: in early spring (immediately after the snow melts) and in midsummer.
Since the beginning of August, you should not feed the plants with nitrogen fertilizers, since they will not have time to prepare for the dormant period and will not winter well. Phosphorus fertilizers give a stronger development for young plants and increase their resistance to drought. As a phosphorus fertilizer, it is recommended to use humated superphosphate. In addition to phosphorus, it contains elements such as iron, manganese, and molybdenum. It is applicated three times at the rate of 16 g per 1 sq.m: in spring, summer and autumn.
Potash is necessary for lawn grasses throughout the growing season for the intensive formation of shoots. When autumn feeding, it increases the resistance of plants to frost, applicate it in three doses at the rate of 10 g per 1 sq.m. Due to the special role of potassium in the life of lawn grasses, it is recommended to use concentrated humic fertilizers only on a potash basis.
If possible, the lawn is fed with organic fertilizers, it is better to apply humated compost. They are applied after the last mowing of plants in winter or early spring, spending 5 kg per 1 sq.m.
When growing turf, lawn grasses are sown on a layer of soil 2 cm thick, poured on a wrap. Crops are watered daily and covered at night with a film to maintain optimal humidity.
In this technology, it is especially important to use liquid fertilizer, since weekly watering allows plants to develop better in a small root layer.
Liquid peat contributes to the increased growth of the root system, which allows you to create a dense layer of turf.
It is recommended to use Potassium humate as a part of tank mixtures with soluble fertilizers and plant protection products. It is not allowed to add the drug to the tank mixture with an acidity lower than pH 5.5. The working concentration of solutions is 0.1% — 0.005%. The use of solutions with a concentration of more than 1% can cause temporary suppression of plants.
